in many important cases which have become before the Court. So long
as I am on the active list there is always the possibility of my
being selected for the highest honour to which a Colonial Judge
can aspire to; as a retired Judge my prospects are entirely destroyed.
If I had done nothing for the good of the Statex so personal a claim might perhaps have little weight; but apart from
eighteen years of strenuous work in the Colonies I think I may
legitimately refer to more public service, though I do so with some
hesitation, for that service is primarily my wife's. Yet if I had
not actively assisted her and encouraged her in her very arduous
labours the Colonial Nursing Association would not hold the important
position as an Imperial institution that it now does.
My original idea, which I commmicated to Your
Excellency some time ago, was to retire in the summer of 1913.
I trust that I may be allowed to fulfil that intention.
I have the honour to be, Sir,
Your Excellency's most obedient Servant,
(sd) F.T.PIGGOTT.
CHIEF JUSTICE.
